I don’t know if anyone else has been bombarded and enticed by what is referred to as BookTok, but what was once a hobby of mine has basically become my most prevalent personality trait.

BookTok is a sub-community on the app TikTok, focused on books and literature. Creators make videos reviewing, discussing, and joking about the books they read. These books range in genre, but many creators tend to focus on young adult fiction, young adult fantasy, and romance novels.

Where I have always been a bibliophile I have been picking up speed over the past few years and now BookTok has pushed me over the edge. No longer am I ashamed of my love of literature and I have gained the confidence to embrace my love of Fantasy Romance books, and my new love of smut. I can not get enough, flying through an entire series in a matter of days. Last year I invested in a Kindle last year making it easier than ever to access reading material, although I still have an attachment to purchasing books and keeping them like little trophies. When my budget runs low and Half Price Books doesn’t have what I need I can always rely on my trusty Kindle.

Last year read so much this that I decided to break my favorite annual post (my reading list) into a monthly series. 2023 has already proven to be just as productive as 2022 so I will continue to post a monthly reading list.

As an extra bonus MightyMiley will be posting her reading lists from time to time. You can also keep up with Hunkiedorië this year as I release more book content than I have in the past.

Something new this year is an added 5 star rating system!

1 star: Did not like it
2 stars: It was okay
3 stars: Liked it
4 stars: Really liked it
5 stars: It was amazing

This should go without saying but as this is just my opinion. Reading books are a deeply personal experience. Something that really strikes the right cord with me may not be your flavor or vice versa. I have the upmost respect for authors and creative types. And although they may not get a high ranking from me, it does not diminish the amount of hard work and bravery it took for them to produce their content. You will never be able to please everyone nor should you try. I hope that my followers are inspired by the books that I share and form their own opinions. Let me know what you think, do you have any suggestions on what I should read next?

Stalked by the Kraken (Monstrous Matches #1)

by Lillian Lark

Rating: 4 out of 5.

A matchmaking witch, an ancient sea creature, and the sex contract they make. Welcome to the Love Bathhouse where desire and acceptance are in the water.

The Witch
Celibacy is a bad look for a matchmaker.
Especially a matchmaker who works at the kind of paranormal bathhouse that would have grandmothers clutching their pearls. A worse look is a matchmaker experiencing a crisis of confidence. I am that matchmaker.

We need raw magic, desperately. And now a mysterious man walks into my office, offering me the exact solution I need. The problem is that he wants to be matched… with me. Matching doesn’t work for me; I found that out the hard way.

The Kraken
I saw her and the creature inside me wanted.
She doesn’t want a relationship. She says that the most we can have are the three nights she promised me, but the dark part of myself isn’t going to let the woman who snared its attention go. I found her. I hunted her. She’s mine.

**Stalked by the Kraken is a monster romance that features tentacles. This book is a standalone and takes place in the same world as, and prior to the events of, Three of Hearts with some character crossover.

Content Warning: Book includes breeding behavior and mentions infertility.

Hunkiedorië Review: I loved this! I was unsure if this was a genre/series I could get behind but this books were so sweet and were the perfect balance of my two loves, monster smut and cozy mystery. I devoured this series and can not wait for more!

Found by the Lake Monster (Monstrous Matches #1.5)

by Lillian Lark

Rating: 4 out of 5.

A lake monster in heat, a lost human in the woods, and the lie that gets her stuffed… Getting lost in the woods was not the adventure Amy had in mind when she jumped at the chance to search for the local lake monster. She just wanted to liven up her steady but boring life, not wonder if every shadow on the ground is a snake and worry that no one will ever find her.

Luckily, someone does find her. Unexpectedly, that person isn’t human. Wildly, he seems to think that she’s his date.

Adrian faces what could be his last heat. As his temperature rises and his biological clock ticks, his only hope is that the witch being sent by a famous matchmaker will be as compatible as he dreams. Can he convince his date to not only provide relief during his heat but also carry his eggs?

Found by the Lake Monster takes place in the same world as Stalked by the Kraken and includes breeding, knotting, and oviposition.

Hunkiedorië Review: Again, this book was the perfect combination of smutty and sweet. I love how well Lillian Lark weaves the two together in her writing. This book is short and SPICY, also my first experience with oviposition, which was a bit bizarre.

Deceived by the Gargoyles (Monstrous Matches #2)

by Lillian Lark

Rating: 5 out of 5.

A curvy librarian looking to start a family, a clan of gargoyles, and the deception that starts it all.

My family has always found me lacking. From the way I dress, how I look, to the type of magic I have. My family name is full of pomp and prestige, and I want nothing to do with it. I’m a witch that knows how to set a goal and I have one in mind.

I want a real family. Dating is a travesty. All the suitors I meet are looking for a connection to the family name I left behind. I need help. Enter the matchmaker. It seems too good to be true that I can give her the list of traits I want in a partner and have my deepest desire answered, but I’m out of options.

Love comes along in the most unexpected ways. From the very first moment I meet Elliot Bramblewick, I have hope. But he’s tricky. I’m not expecting him to be hiding two other mates. Mates who are as alarmed and intrigued by my presence as I am by theirs. He thinks I’m a perfect fit for them, but can I open my heart and discard my list long enough to see if this is the family I’m looking for?

None of my lists and plans prepared me for being courted by three gargoyles.

Deceived by the Gargoyles is a standalone monster romance in the same world as Stalked by the Kraken with multiple love interests who are in relationships with each other. There will be no choosing among the love interests.

Content Warning: This book includes breeding, knots, size difference, lying, and deception within an open relationship.

Hunkiedorië Review: Of all the books currently published in this series I think this one is my favorite. Although I usually despise books that feature heavily lying and deception I was able to overlook it for my favorite troupe: reverse harem where the boyfriends are boyfriends…yum. I can’t explain it but it has totally become my thing and the fact that these are monsters with a love of books and cooking was really a cherry on top of what I thought was already perfection.

Ensnared by the Werewolf (Monstrous Matches #2.5)

by Lillian Lark

Rating: 3 out of 5.

A heartbroken witch, a cursed werewolf, and a fated encounter under the full moon.

Belinda loves curse breaking. When a man shows up at her shop asking for help, she’s delighted to assist.
Who wouldn’t help their fated mate after all? Things go from bad to worse and now she’s left on the rebound. Perhaps riding the local lake monster through his heat will be enough to patch up her wounded soul and get her life out of the rut it’s fallen in.
Getting lost in the woods on the way to her date was not a part of the plan. What also isn’t a part of the plan? Belinda has unfinished business coming for her with an entirely different type of rut in mind. Can she outrun what hunts her? Does she want to?

Ensnared by the Werewolf takes place in the same world and night as Found by the Lake Monster and includes chasing, knotting, and breeding. This is the longer version of Captured by the Werewolf, formerly published in the Into the Woods anthology.

Hunkiedorië Review: I liked this one but I do struggle with stories where both main characters clearly want each other but one holds themselves apart due to a misguided sense of right and wrong when it comes to their appearance or station. It took the entire book to overcome the MMC’s hangups but it was a cute story none the less.

Entranced by the Basilisks (Monstrous Matches #3)

by Lillian Lark

Rating: 4 out of 5.

A human who opened the wrong magical book, her stern boss, and his “friend” who says he can help…
I’ve been cursed. Not metaphorically. Not, “Oh no! I spilled my coffee!” or “I broke a heel!” No. I’ve been cursed by a book and now I’m a danger to everyone I care about. After finding out that the things that go bump in the night are real a few weeks ago, this is doing nothing for my peace of mind. Pair it all with the fact that the boss I can hardly speak to seems to be the only one with any answers and the tension between him and the seductive expert he’s brought in…
The outlook for this group project is alarming… but my body is acting like it knows things my mind won’t yet accept.

Entranced by the Basilisks is a standalone monster romance in the same world as Stalked by the Kraken, but best read after Deceived by the Gargoyles. This book has two love interests who are also in a relationship with each other. There will be no choosing between the love interests.
Content Warning: This book includes descriptions of anxiety, snakes, deceptions and manipulations perpetrated by the love interest, and highly inaccurate snake anatomy.

Hunkiedorië Review: Love a good triad story and the transformation of the FMC’s life was a really fun one to read. I absolutely loved it, it was so unique.

Three of Hearts (Harpies of a Feather #1)

by Lillian Lark

Rating: 3 out of 5.

A wolf shifter, a demon, and a harpy all walk into a hotel. It’s not the start of a joke, it’s a clusterf*ck.

One favor throws Zephyrine into a situation that has her questioning the main rule that harpies cling to; men aren’t for keeping. But accidents happen. How’s a harpy supposed to say no to a hot night with not one, but two men?

Greg is sure he’s found his soulmate, but his wolf doesn’t seem to agree. That is until a harpy walks in and turns his world upside down. What’s a wolf-shifter to do when his wolf wants not one person, but two?

But Asa isn’t going to let Gregory go without trying everything. And if that means adding a feisty harpy to their bed, he’ll be damned if that stops him. How’s a demon to get his ex-lover and harpy guest to stay? By seducing them of course.

Get your paranormal love on for this MMF story. Swords will cross. Mating marks will be traded. And maybe, just maybe, a harpy will decide that some men are for keeping.

Hunkiedorië Review: Lillian Lark, bless you for all these poly/reverse haram/triad stories. I am absolutely eating them up and loving every moment of this smutty monster heaven you have created in your books. This one was another home run.

Pair of Fools (Harpies of a Feather #2)

by Lillian Lark

Rating: 3 out of 5.

A trapped harpy, a demon collecting secrets, and an adventure that weaves them tighter than the bond they share.

The Harpy. Trouble follows me like a shadow, but I’ve flown too close to the sun this time. A few thoughtless words while drowning in guilt, and I’m trapped in a deal I didn’t ask for with my rival. I’m weakened every second we spend apart.

I’ve been tricked. He’s ruined my life, but now he needs my help. It’s the opportunity I’ve been waiting for. This demon is soul deep and I’m ready to carve him out. But his isn’t the worst debt hanging over my head.

The Demon. My past haunts me, but a certain fiery harpy chases away the shadows. I’ve wronged a woman I deeply admire, but I can’t save the people being sold to the highest bidder without her. I am a parasite. To survive, I must bond to someone strong, and this bond is like no other I’ve experienced. I want to make this right. I want to devour her secrets.

Keeping Sophia Shirazi was never an option, but now that I’ve had a taste, how can I ever let her go?

**Pair of Fools is Mace’s and Sophia’s story. This is a MF romance that takes place after Three of Hearts with crossover characters from Stalked by the Kraken, but can be read as a standalone story.

Content Warning: This book contains mentions of suicide and depictions of the trafficking of sentient beings, violence, and gore.

Hunkiedorië Review: It was fun to revisit some fun characters from Stalked by the Kraken. This was an exciting story with a happily ever after that had me turning pages at a break neck speed.

A Soul to Keep (Duskwalker Brides #1)

by Opal Reyne

Rating: 2 out of 5.

All Reia ever wanted was freedom. Known as a harbinger of bad omens and blamed for Demons eating her family, Reia is shunned by her entire village. When the next offering is due and the monstrous Duskwalker is seen heading their way, her village offers her an impossible choice – be thrown into the prison cells or allow herself to be sacrificed to a faceless monster. However, he is not what he seems. His skull face and glowing eyes are ethereal, and she finds herself unwittingly enchanted by him.

All Orpheus ever wanted was a companion. Each decade, in exchange for a protection ward from the Demons that terrorise the world, Orpheus takes a human offering to the Veil – the place he lives and the home of Demons. The brief companionship does little to ease his loneliness, and their lives were always, unfortunately, cut short. He’d thought it was a hopeless endeavour, until he met her. She’s not afraid of him, and his insatiable desire deepens within every moment of her presence. But will Orpheus be able to convince Reia to stay before she’s lost to him forever?

Hunkiedorië Review: Okay, I struggle to understand myself how I feel about this book and series as a whole. These books pop up all over social media as a must read, and I don’t really agree with the hype. Part of me LOVES how sweet and devoted Orpheus and all the MMC of this series are. They are absolutely the best. Also the world that Opal Reyne has built is fantastic, I could read a dozen stories from this world. However I do NOT vibe with her female main characters. I like their strength and resourcefulness. But I feel as though they manipulate these relationships and are no better than the villainous woman of Orpheus’s past. Using sex as a reward or means of power and manipulation, and once it has been established that the MMC’s will gain more intelligence as they eat more humans the girls put a stop to that, not because eating people is wrong but they like their men simple and are worried that their males getting smarter might change the dynamic of their relationship. I will finish this series but overall her FMC’s leave a bad taste in my mouth.

A Soul to Heal (Duskwalker Brides #2)

by Opal Reyne

Rating: 2 out of 5.

All Delora ever wanted was to disappear. Thrown into the Veil for a crime she committed, Delora was discarded by the world. Although afraid of her oncoming demise, she accepts it as it would be a worldly escape from her problems. She didn’t expect that she would wake up from her deadly fall, nor that the person who saved her would be a Duskwalker. She’s wary about him at first, but Delora begins to realize there’s more to him than just a faceless monster.

All he ever wanted was a name. After discovering that humans can be kept as companions, he begins planning for the day he finds his own bride. He still lacks humanity and there is much to learn first. One morning when leaving his cave, a human suddenly crashes into him from the sky. Broken and sleeping, he gets to work on healing the woman. It doesn’t take him long to understand she’s wounded in a way his magic can’t heal. But will he be able to gain her affections, or will she come to hate him as he stumbles his way through learning about her – and more importantly, himself?

Hunkiedorië Review: Ugh, Magnar deserved better

Good Deeds

by Kathryn Moon

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Nötchka Uumian, solo-scavenger and pilot, only came to Bandalier for business. But when her first ever heat cycle hits, she has two choices: get off the planet or find somewhere safe to ride out the heatburns. Determined to never end up mated and trapped in a kitchen, she heads into the Droid district. You can’t mate if the other person isn’t an organic right?

Low on funds and preparing for weeks of sexual stupor, Nötchka finds herself in the Nuts in Bolts, a nearly deserted Cozy House with a handful of older models, two of which aren’t even servicing. But the owner, Proto model Avan-8, is willing to trade sex for repairs and Nötchka is desperate. Everything will stay simple with droids… or it would if she didn’t end up liking them all so much.

If she can just make it through her heat without too many feelings, avoid the pack of Dendärys males that seem determined to catch her, and figure out why women are going missing, it will all work out.

It’s definitely not vekking working out.

Good Deeds is a full length, insta-burn, standalone, reverse harem romance novel, starring a fiesty heroine and five fritzing hot android heroes.

Hunkiedorië Review: This is the sweetest little insta-smut story. Honestly all of the droids in this book absolutely melted my heart. I could have read a dozen more books of these characters.

Baby & the Late Night Howlers (Sweetverse #1)

by Kathryn Moon

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Baby’s heat is coming… After years of assuming she was a beta, discovering her omega designation in a biker bar surrounded by alphas isn’t exactly fulfilling any fantasies for Baby. She only wanted to get have a fun night, not get knotted, bitten, and bonded. Now Baby’s entire life is about to turn upside down. With her heat on its way, she needs to find a pack, a nest, and alphas she can trust.

The Late Night Howlers have given up hope… After years of waiting for an omega to choose them, this motorcycle club of alphas is ready to move on with their lives. Until one sweet woman takes a chance on them. A rundown bar and apartment building is no place to spoil a new omega but the Howlers are determined to do right by Baby when she needs them. All they have to do is keep her satisfied while resisting the mouthwatering temptation to bite and bond her, permanently. When a rival MC comes sniffing after Baby, her safety is put at risk and the Howlers may be torn apart forever.

Hunkiedorië Review: Book one of the Sweet Omegaverse just hit right. I loved the underdog story of the MC (that’s motorcycle club, I had to look it up). Also Baby was a great character I loved how she approached her new life without fear and stood up for her beliefs, especially when it came to keeping the other women in the club. RH is probably my genre so I of course gobbled this one right up. I also think that this book was probably the best out of the whole series which towards the end felt like it was rally dragging on.

Lola & the Millionaires: Part One (Sweetverse #2)

by Kathryn Moon

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Lola Barnes only wants one thing, to get her life under control. No more chasing alphas who abuse and toss away betas like her. No more hiding in her cousin’s apartment licking wounds that won’t heal. Armed with her dream job and her less than dreamy apartment, Lola is ready to start a new chapter of her life without alphas. But that’s easier said than done when one stumbling incident after another leads Lola closer to an alluring pack of captivating men.

These alphas are everything Lola dreamed of, but they already have an omega—a playful male model who won’t stop flirting with her. And Lola is only a beta, one who comes with deep scars and an unshakeable aversion to alphas and their powerful presences. If only she could resist their perfect beta, Leo, whose patience and determination to see her heal breaks down one wall after another.

When the alpha who all but destroyed Lola tries to start a game of cat and mouse that’s all claws, the safest place for Lola may be the one she’s most terrified of, in the arms of an alpha pack.

Hunkiedorië Review: I ranked this story 2nd in the series I’m not sure if two books were really needed to tell Lola’s story but I really enjoyed the love acceptance and support of Lola and all the men of her pack, it was fun to read an alpha dynamic. And I wasn’t sure how I would feel about a male omega but again totally dug the poly relationships within this story.

Lola & the Millionaires: Part Two (Sweetverse #3)

by Kathryn Moon

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Lola is being hunted by her past, stalked with every step she takes. Sheltered with the pack of her dreams, at first it seems like the hardest challenge isn’t even staying safe from Indy. Tensions at work are at a tipping point and after taking the role of management’s spy, Lola’s in the crossfire if anything goes wrong.

As romances between Lola and the pack members are developing left and right, the woman who swore she wanted nothing to do with alpha is turning to them like a bloom to the sun. If only it weren’t just one monstrous alpha that twisted her own thoughts. Lola is quickly realizing that her worst enemy is herself, and it’s like walking the tightrope to find a balance with the pack that gives her strength rather than sends her toppling to the ground.

But Indy won’t be ignored. One way or another, he’s determined to get his hands on her again. Lola needs more than a pack to shield her. She needs to be ready to fight.

Hunkiedorië Review: Part two has lots of excitement, love and a happily ever after.

Lyric & the Heartbeats (Sweetverse #4)

by Lana Kole

Rating: 2 out of 5.

A stubborn omega…After years of wishing, Lyric’s dream is finally coming true. She’s landed her first tour, when all her life she’s been told to settle and find herself a pack. Now she can prove that she’s more than her omega designation, more than the perfect mold her mother tried to force her to fit in. All she needs is a band. Bruised hearts from broken pasts…After collecting a talented team of musicians, Lyric’s dreams can come true. Living on the road with a band is a lot like having a pack, and fighting her own nature is hard enough without worrying about why these alphas watch her like circling hawks.A pack of misfits…Between four alphas and a beta who are as sweet as they are sinful focusing all of their attention on Lyric, her independent will weakens every day. By the end of tour, can she break down her prejudices and open up to the five men who would do anything for her?

Hunkiedorië Review: A new author has joined the Sweetverse series. I didn’t vibe with this book as much, the men’s stories felt a little too surface level to me and it was hard for me to really form any attachment to those characters. I think with more time and exploration I could have gotten there, but I felt like character development was a little too rushed.

Fighting Instincts (Sweetverse #5)

by Lana Kole

Rating: 2 out of 5.

As an omega, Stellan is supposed to want a pack. Instead, he wanted Elise, another omega.
She followed her instincts. Stellan fought his.

Left behind, Stellan tries to move on with a heart as broken and bruised as his opponents after a fight in the ring. Fighting is all he has, and as an omega, he breaks all the odds. When a bid goes bitter, he’s forced to pay it back with his own blood. At least until he’s rescued by a handsome alpha and taken home to his pack.

A pack that already has an omega.
Face to face with the omega who left him, Stellan will have to fight his own instincts to find happiness.
Fate brought them back together, and this time, Stellan isn’t letting Elise go, no matter what opponents they have to face.

Hunkiedorië Review: It was interesting to read a story in this series with a tough almost alpha-like omega. I liked this approach, I just wish Stellan would have communicated more (always my issue with books) and I wish he would have formed relationships with all of the alphas.

Bad Alpha (Sweetverse #6)

by Kathryn Moon

Rating: 2 out of 5.

Eve had one job. Kill Adam.

But when her mark for the night turns out to be a gift-wrapped omega, Eve can’t resist delaying the job and enjoying the opportunity before her.

One bite is all it takes. That’s what Adam is counting on. One bite and he might live till morning.

Success is complicated and on the run for their lives, Eve and Adam need the one thing neither of them wants. A pack. Can three good men tame the killer and the con artist? Not if this bad alpha can help it.

Bad Alpha is a MMFMM romance standalone with a HEA, set in the Sweetverse. Warning for violence and the acts of a dangerous woman in command.

Hunkiedorië Review: Not quite my flavor, not into the whole feral alpha always on the move conclusion, but I did love all the alpha men submitting to Eve (especially Rory).

All Packed Up (Sweetverse #7)

by Lana Kole

Rating: 2 out of 5.

What happens when an omega is paired with the wrong pack? You run. Or at least that’s what Wendy did when she felt her heat approaching around her alphas. So with a bag and her best feline friend in tow, Wendy ran.

No more betting, no more fighting, and certainly no more crushing on the fighters. Nic had turned a new leaf and was dedicating himself to his business. But when an omega “finds a broken window in his gym bathroom,” the boring future he had resigned himself to might get a whole lot more interesting.

An omega on the run would do that to anyone.

Hunkiedorië Review: I would have liked more of a poly relationship between all the characters but it was fine. A little too angsty for me since all of these characters were so sweet. I really just want a lot of love and smut with a cozy vibe, but this book was okay.

Faith & the Dead End Devils (Sweetverse #8)

by Kathryn Moon

Rating: 2 out of 5.

No one ever said not to bite the hand that unlocks your cage.

Faith Robins has been torn away from her brother, kept captive by an omega trafficking ring, and auctioned to the highest bidder. But when fate twists a new key in her lock, she finds herself in the care of an alpha named Bear, safe for the first time in ages.

She’s lost in this new world, surrounded by strange men, but she has claws now. And she’s prepared to dig them in and hold onto safety, no matter the cost.
The Dead End Devils aren’t a pack. They aren’t Boy Scouts. And if their prez, King, has his way, they’re getting rid of this broken and terrified woman at the first chance. Before she can tear their club apart.

Hunkiedorië Review: Wrapping up the series was a little lack luster. I did like the whole reverse bite situation but by the time I made it to this book I was ready to say goodbye to the Sweetverse.
